should i use a 700r4 or a 400 trans
so i've got myself a 1995 yj i got from my uncle with a blown up 2.5l so my plan is to put in a 4.3l gm engine and auto trans. but i cant decide whether to use the 400 trans that came with the 4.3 i bought or to use a 700r4 trans which i know i can get my hands on. the jeep will be driven to the trail so i want the overdrive. any pros and cons you guys have will help.

the 400 is strong, depending on the gearing, if you need overdrive or not? what gears? tires size?

watch the 700r4 - you need to make sure the converter is locking in 2nd and 4th or you'll burn it up.

what is the donor? model/year?
most came with 700r4's already.
i wheeled hard on a rebuilt to stock 700r4, never had a single issue with it.
just be sure the case has a big "K" on it and you will be just fine.
you can get a 700r4/231c hd combo from a early90's s10 blazer, FIY.
i would run the K case 700r4 any day of the week myself.

If you are planning this for a YJ you'll need a different tcase....chevy tcases and axles are all passenger side drop from what I understand. YJ's run Drivers side drop axles and tcases... So unless you plan on swapping your front axle you might want to take this into consideration...

wrong.
both fullsize and smaller had drivers side drop t/cases. such as the example of the 700r4/231c combo i suggested from a s10 blazer, driver side drop.
241's and 231's were abound in the drivers side drop variety.
dont know why most people think chevys are ALL passenger side drop front axles.....
have a look at a 700r4 oil pan, and see how fun it would be to put a passenger side drop t/case in there, with the oil pan as offset as it is....

So, TC isn't need on a YJ if you go with a 700r4?

You can, and should, use a 231c hd. That will bolt right up to the 700R4 and be the correct drop for the front axle. The mounting pattern and clocking is all wrong on a 231j to bolt up to a 700R4, not to mention the minor issue of the Jeep's 21 or 23 spline input shaft vs the 700R4's 27 spline.

To avoid AA prices to adapt it. Sounds like its cheaper to get the 4.3l motor, 700r4 and the tc then mount it up?

Wow, wish I had thought of that..............
This is why EVERY TIME I suggest getting a complete S10 etc to use as a donor. Zero adapters needed.

And I thought you were older... Nothing like forum humor for the young ones.
All jokes aside, doing research before hand, can save you. Which is what I am going to do. Plan it out.

I posted that because that is exactly what I say to do for every swap, get the whole drivetrain in the donor rig if at all possible. Too many people want to get a motor here, tranny there, and a transfer case from God knows where..... Then ask questions when it doesn't all go together!
A complete donor will also get you the wiring, any cables you need, and so on. Not to mention the guarantee that it will all just bolt together
I have yet to use a single adapter for any swap I have done myself......
