Shifter question

Have a question. Just recently boought a 05 Unlimited with a lift and 33's (first ever Jeep) and finally was able to take it out in the woods- Starting off the day when I tried to shift if to 4 low it was finikie. But it finally took. By the end of the night when I tried putting it back in 4lo It would pop out of gear, grinding, etc when I was trying different ways to get it in. I was trying to pull it in so much it was loving the plastic column surrounding it but it just didnt want to go in. Now the shifter itself squeeks as your going down the road in 2wd. Whats causing this? Is there a cable linkage that isnt tight enough that needs to be tightened?
