shifter

I recently bought a 1989 cherokee laredo. For 300,000 miles and being 22 years old its in good shape. It will not stay in any of the 4x4 settings. It also has a switch on the dash to the right of the steering wheel, it has power on the topside and comfort on the bottom side.
Can someone give me some feed back on what the switch is for and what can I do to make the 4x4 lever stay locked in the settings. I dont get on here much. My computer does not handle the site well. If you have answers or advice please contact me at sanderson5546@yahoo.com thanks!!!!
