RPM Surge

My wife has a 2006 grand cherokee v8 FT4WD. While in park it the RPMs just started surging to about 1500. 85,000 miles, serviced regularly, never used to tow or worked hard.

Any thoughts or common problems with this model?

Dirty or malfunctioning idle air control valve? Or a flakey throttle position sensor which usually wear out around the idle position. If you have a scan tool and can read live sensor input, check to see what the computer thinks the throttle is doing. Is it nice and steady or is it jumping around while slowly depressing the gas pedal.
