Reliability, comfort - XJ and ZJ

Hey guys,

Newcomer on these forums. I have been thinking of buying a Jeep for a long time and it seems the time has come. I have done a good amount of searching but still havenīt got all the answers. Hope you can help me out here.

In conclusion I am looking for a petrol Jeep XJ or ZJ that would be:
2)cheap in price as well as taking care of it
4)off road capable

As fas as I have gathered my info the older XJ-s are more reliable (less electronics to fail, t-case and gearbox more reliable) but they ride like a proper 4x4. Grand Cherokees (ZJ) are more comfortable but may have more issues. 249 t-case models have viscous coupling issues, some gearboxes (was it the 42RE?) have some problems as well? These are the kind of problems I would like to avoid. I would prefer the 4.0l 6-cyl but if the V8 models are more reliable then thats the way to go.

So - I am mainly trying to avoid possible big expenses whilst looking at 1994-1998 models both XJ and ZJ. Mind you where I live XJ-s are a rare breed, ZJ-s are very common on the other hand. WJ seem to be just out of my reach, that is expensive.

Whats your imput? What year, model, t-case, gearbox, motor combo should be the best in your mind and why?

Any 92-95 xj should likely have the 4.0 and the 231 t-case. If you spend a few dollars on some small easy upgrades it can be very reliable and capable.

84 xj 350tbi, sm465, 203/205, 60/70. links and other junk.
what size sawzall blades does it take to fit 40's?
