Regearing for the first time... Progressing
Well folks, I tried to regear my HP D30 with a friend last weekend but we didn't get very far. Tonight I'm going to try to regear the axle alone. While it might be harder, I figure it'll be easier to concentrate and work at a leisurely pace when on my own time.
Ultimately I'm slapping an ARB w/ Yukon 4.10 into a HP Dana30. All new components. 1) Pinion Baffles, I've heard that most people don't run them. Been told they decrease lubication @ slow speeds. True? Any drawback to not using them? 2) Carrier preload. I measured .065" in play for the carrier. .015 was added until things felt good. So I currently have .030 in shims on each side. How does this preload look to you? [yt]C1xGmUEFT6w[/yt] Any input is appreciated, either post up or get me through AIM (same screen name)

haha, good. Thought I was talking to myself for the past few hours.
Post 4 edited with pics. Whatcha think? Get the pinion a little more towards the carrier? It seems that the ~55 for the pinion was a good guess/start, heh.

One concern I have is the sharp line on the drive side. My backlash is optimal right now, but I can't say that it looks like a clean flat on flat gear contact.

imo the pinion is to close add a shim to the pinoin and it should take that sharp line away.

Alright, will try. Hopefully it'll center out that pattern.

Setting it up with 61 for pinion depth. Once that is changed will my backlash need to be adjusted as well?

A combo of pirate4x4's, yukons, arb, and a few random ones from misc places.
I'll spew out links once I finish.
