Quick Block Question

Quick question. I might look at picking up a 4.0 L6 to rebuild to replace my 165,000 one in my 89 Cherokee (witht he 4.0 in it) but am wondering. What years will fit? I know I can take the accessories from my current one, but are all the blocks the same?

Thanks
Nick

I honestly can't remember where I read this, but I want to say the 88-90 were swapable. Then the 91-95 were swapable. Then the 96-98 were swapable.

Again, I can't site any facts and this is just off the top of my head. If it were me, I'd be looking for a 88-89 model to be on the safe side. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will respond.

The blocks are all the same, it's the heads that differ. Rennix M.P.I 87 - 90, 91 - 99 HO, don't know for shure but I think after 99 the coil(s) is mounted directly on the plugs ie no plug wires.
The short block on all the 4.0L's are the same.

Aren't the knock sensors loactions different in the older blocks verses the newer blocks?

I had also read a article in JP (recently) that talks about a "Mexican" 4.0 that has a single iron rib and not a dual rib around the bottom of the block on top of the oil pan?

The location of the knock sensor won't make any diff, it's just wire.
As for a Mexican block, thats news to me. Are they OEM?.

Supposedly so. There is also semi-confirmed "mexican" ford 289 blocks that are supposed to be stronger (beefier) as well.

I read the articles, but I personally have only seen reg versions of most blocks I see. I'm still passively looking for a block to throw in the garage and rebuild in my spare time. I was more concerned with the old V belt acc bolt patterns lining up with the more current Serpentine belt setup my 93 has.

Also read in either JP or Peterson's that there was suposedly a 94-95 4.0 block with some kind of addition support on the mains?!?
