Question about wheeling with 5 speed???

Ok, so I've never done any heavy offroading with a manual transmission. I have read in a couple other threads that some of the vets mentioning not to depress the clutch while in water or deep mud. 1) Is this accurate? 2) Why not? 3) What do you do if you need to rock the jeep to get it unstuck?

There is a reason no one has replied for 2 days. I don't mean this to sound harsh, just factual. Join a club and go on a trail with them. They will teach you more in one ride than all the typing we can do here. Off-roading is not a classroom subject.
