Overfilling the oil in a NV3550

I have heard that the NV3550 transmission oil level can run too low when on a steep incline. The story is the front slinger sometimes doesn't reach the oil. Is this true and is it ok to overfill the transmission by adding to the shifter hole? If so, how much can I add above the standard 2.2 quarts?
