O2 sensor question
I was talking with a prof. mechanic today about how many JK Jeep Wranglers come in for repair and for what reason. He brought up the troublesome Oxygen sensors and noted that they're constantly replacing them. According to the dealer, they actually stock the sensors because of how often they fry out.
Now, I asked WHY they fry out and from what I'm told it's an issue of heat. Apparently the sensors are actually cooked by the heat coming off the engine. So, if that's the case, does anyone know how to PREVENT this? Is there a heat shield that protects them? Can it be beefed up or upgraded? Thanks for reading, NYJeepGirl

the mechanic might be mssing with you. all the o2 sensors i have seen are threaded right into the exhaust system. no way to avoid heat.

thanks for the quick reply!
Thanks for the reply! I appreciate your input. The Mechanic definitely wasn't messing with me, he's a friend of mine.
So there's no way to avoid the heat exposure? Have you had any problems with your system? Have you had to replace the sensors? I understand there are 4 of them in the JK Wrangler. As I'm not mechanically inclined, I couldn't replace them myself. It annoys me to think that I may eventually have to bring my jeep in for something as stupid as a sensor, (with a few hundred dollars at a pop). Sincerely, NYJeepGirl |

How come cold? I usually let the exhaust get warm to the touch so the sensor will come out a bit easier, cold makes the metals lock together. I would agree that anything over warm for heat could damage the threads upon removal....Anyways, Its really easy, a ratchet and a O2 socket will fix your problem. Most good o2 sensor threads will come pre-treated with neverseize to keep them from freezing up in the exhaust too over long periods of time.
