no drive just noise!!!

hi guys need your wealth of knowlede on this have looked everywhere for answer> 1998 grand cherokee 4.0 l6 auto, just swapped out my engine with hole in piston for 60,000 m engine runs fine but now wont select any gear just get popping grinding noise checked fluid levels and linkages all fine.

Convertor? Idk... Chech all electrical plugs that may go to the trans, again idk,
