New here, 97 jeepgcl thumping?

Ok I don't know if it would be correct to say thumping but anyway.....I bought a 97 jgcl about a month ago with 164 mi on it, so far so good. First jeep, only owned explorers before this. The past 2 weeks I've noticed/felt something like tires trying to catch on snow, the thumping, catching and then go. This only happens when stopped at a sign or light and then I step on the gas to go is when it happens. So what could be the problem, I've only experienced it driving on snow, but there is none right now. It's not something that happens everytime. Any ideas on why this is doing this and how to fix it would be great. Thanks

Wanted to add that this problem is coming from the front, if that helps.

First thought in my head is a failing u-joint if it matches wheel speed. Check for play in axle joints and drive shaft joints, including the rear just in case.

Thank you, it's also being suggested to me to have the transmission checked out also, that it may be slipping? (wonderful)
