You might be able to save the fuel delivery system and just swap the block. Any late 70's to mid 80's Cherokee, CJ and Scrambler should have the 2.5 but you might also be able to pull one out of a relative Concord or Spirit. The only issue is the Iron Duke that snuck into production, that's not the engine you want. You might have an easier time finding these rotting away in an abandoned Eagle or DJ-5 but I don't see any picking yards near Port Charlotte.

Hey, you can go through customization process. I think below sources will be helpful to you find better parts to rebuild the engine.

84 was first year for 2.5 Jeep motor.

If you own a Renix Jeep, you'll want to check this out.

Yep. 2.46 AMC. Not the old GM Iron Duke from 1983 and earlier.

This is right. I have an issue identifying these engines because of all the dumb swaps in the junkyards(probably why they're there) but it helps point out what should be obvious. 79-83 was the Pontiac 2.5 but I keep seeing these in vehicles onward into 86 and 87. I'm not sure if it was immediately after AM introduced their new 4cyl engine but GM went to another bolt pattern afterwards and that was pretty much the end of those easy swaps. I guess people have been picking these out of older cars then swapping them into Spirits and Eagles(WHY?!). Though I never see a 4cyl in a mid 80's Jeep. That's a myth up here.

What is the role of this 4cyl YJ? Camping? Rock crawler(lol)? Shiny highway cruiser? There's no way you go bogging with it so do you use it to deliver city mail? It's kind of an important detail.
