need help with ford 9in pinion!!!!!

I went to change my pinion seal and took out my bearings to check them out and when i went to put them back in, the pinion was moved all the way to the right and now i cant get the bearings back on. i hav the back axle jacked up with the tires off the ground and tried moving the tires back and forth and the pinion just moves up and down a little bit. here are some pictures:

also, before i changed the seal, when i would accelerate the whole car would slam, for lack of a better word. When i removed the pinion seal, i noticed a lot of play in the pinion. What would cause that?

I have a ford 9in with a detroit locker.
