Need AMC V-8 Guru

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Need Info on push rod length for a 304 AMC.
New re built
Flat top pistons,
Comp cams Hi Energy 268 Cam
Hydraulic lifters
AMC rockers

When I assembled my engine I measured the lifter compression after the rockers were torqued. The averaged .110 with some being .120 of travel left in the lifter.
I consulted my engine builder and he said that was OK.

During the build I spun the oil pump on the stand and watched the lifters pump up and oil out the top of each rocker.
So I am certian all the lifters are pumping up.
I also pulled the valve covers after 500 miles all looked good.

To the point I have some valve train tap sounds like a solid lifter engine.
How much lifter compression would be safe.
I would like to change the push rods to make the tick go away, but don't know how much free travel hydraulic lifters would be happy with.

Of course I will remove a Rod or two and Check the OAL before ordering

Or it may be normal to hear them through the fire wall.

Yep chevy and AMC use the same Push rods... So you can order chevy push rods .150 longer then stock since not everyone makes Pushrods for the AMC's or so they think. If the cam maker says to install longer rods, I would do it...

I went back and read the card again and the .150 longer push rods are to be used with The replacement Comp cams Stud type lifters and not the OEM style lifters. Shame on me.

Thanks
