Is this my Transmission???

I have had problems shifting into 3rd and 4th recently. If I double clutch it shifts fine but if not it grinds pretty bad. And no matter what I do if I'm downshifting to 4th or 3rd it grinds. I was hoping a transmission lube change would help with no avail. Slave and master seem to be fine. Clutch seems to be fine too (no slipping). I am assuming that the syncros have gone (150000 miles) Any expertise on the subject would be a great help.

At a glance, it does present the symptoms of worn syncros.

However, air in the hydraulics can present the same symptoms. Check for a fluid loss in the master cylinder, then check above the clutch pedal under the dash for signs of leakage. The master will leak fluid into the inside of the Jeep.

Also look at the slave mounted on the bellhousing for signs of fluid leaking, this would indicate a bad slave cylinder.

If there are no leaks present anywhere, bleed the system repeatedly! Flushing out all the old fluid & possibly any air will greatly improve your clutch's engagement/disengagement ability.

If that doesn't help, you may have to face the possibility of bad syncros.

I have inspected the slave pretty good but not the master. I'll flush it tomorrow and see what happens. Its just DOT 4 Brake fluid right?

Yes, DOT 3 or 4 compatible fluid.

Look under the dash for this.

took it to a transmission shop today (AAMCO) they said everything looked good except for the transmission. "something is definitely going on in there." Now I guess I'm looking at a cool grand to get it rebuilt. Any other alternatives?

Yep, get a FSM (Factory Service Manual) and then buy a master rebuild kit (all new bearings, syncros, & seals) from an eBay seller named "transdeals4u" and rebuild it yourself.

I just did my AX-15 and the kit was $187.50 including shipping.

worn syncros

If you have your tranny rebuilt or do it yourself of course its a good idea to change out the the clutch and most importantly lube the splines of the imput shaft (the clutch kit should come with a small packet of grease) this is one of the main reasons of premature synco wear.
The clutch has to slide on the imput shaft to release compleatly if it cant slide it drags and the syncros get over worked

I think rebuilding my transmission is a little over my head. I think I'm going to have to bit the bullet and pay to have it done. I will ask about greasing the spline. My clutch, master, and slave are not that old is it imperative that I replace them as well as the throw out bearing?

I do try to cover as many typical issues as possible with some photos, "a picture is worth a thousand words" they say! I have my camera with me on all my jobs, and in fact I have some rear main seal replacement pics that I need to upload that I haven't gotten to yet.

No I don't work in a shop, but I used to be a mechanic for Volvo/BMW/Mercedes-Benz dealers back in the day, so I try to do as much of my own work on our 3 Jeeps (2 YJ's & a WJ) and for other Jeep owners I know. I'm in the jet engine manufacturing business these days producing F-22 & F-35 Fifth Generation Fighter aircraft engines.

I bought the kit from Transdeals4u, $137.50 shipped. I am still researching if I want to try to do it myself. I also ordered a new clutch and throw out bearing. I figure the slave and master can wait for now.
