Mopar Performance Parts Camshaft
I have found a Jeep dealer offering to sell this cam package for under $30:
Camshaft packages for 2.5L 4-cylinder applications. Includes camshaft, tappets, assembly oil and instruction sheet.
Has anyone replaced their cam? Is this difficult? What other parts are needed? And what has been your experience with the performance?
Thanks

Thats a hell of a deal! I have one in my 94YJ 2.5L and I have been impressed with. I got the.440 lift/248 duration cam which gives the motor more torque in the low rpm range. This cam is great for when I'm going really slow on the trail and the motor does'nt bog down like it used to.
Installation took about 6 hours of actual work but I took my sweet *** time with it over two days. You will need a few other parts to do this mod.
Timing cover gasket kit.
RTV
Razor blades to scrape off old gasket.
Harmonic balancer puller. Rent it at Autozone
Extendable magnetic pick-up tool. For install/removal of lifters.
Valve cover gasket.
Brake cleaner to clean the gasket surfaces.
Coolant
It's not a difficult mod.

your cam
I am thinking of getting a mild cam for my 2.5L (1995), but I have to pass New Jersey Emmisions which are pretty strict. how does it actually perform. From a start?, on the highway?, and just cruising? I do a lot more on road then off. Thanks

anything like that for a 4.0? I'm pretty sure it would void my warranty for the rebuilt but i could plop it in after the warranty is up while i wait for 350 day!

It helps more from a start. I noticed greater power from 500rpm-2500rpm. After 2500 rpm I can't tell a difference on the trail but on the street you don't won't this cam for long commutes to work.

I don't know if a cam alone would affect your ability to pass emissions testing, however on the Mopar website it does say:
*Not legal for sale or use on pollution-controlled motor vehicles
As far as performance, the website says it is for mild competition and is for the 1100-4800 rpm range.
In general, higher lift, longer duration cams add power and torque, two very good things.
Quan--
Mopar makes three performance cams for the 4.0, this is the info from their website, with the parts numbers for each. Just call your dealership with the part number for their price.
Part Number Advertised Duration O-Lap Center Line Lift Basic RPM Recom. Spring Applications & Comments
*P4529228 240/240 24 108 .430/.430 900-4700 P4529214 Mild. Comp
*P4529229 248/248 32 108 .440/.440 1100-4800 P4529214 Mild. Comp
*P4529230 256/256 40 108 .450/.450 1300-4900 P5249464 Mild. Comp
I am thinking of having the dealership install it, and take advantage of warranty protection etc., however if they say it is not legal for sale or use, I'm not sure if the warranty would apply, and even if they WOULD install it.
For $29.96 (for my application) I'm gonna buy it and if it sits in the box for awhile until I try it, or find the right guy to do it, it is ok.

Where I live in Colorado, they just do a tail pipe sniffer. I have no question that it would pass. It just runs too well. On the tailpipe sniffer it was about 20% of the limit. They check at an idle and at some accelerated rpm around 2500-3000.

I have one of those 2.5 liter cams in my 95 wrangler. Passed Delaware emissions with flying colors. Now granted the engine is freshly rebuilt, but you should not have any concerns about passing emissions testing. I did not get to drive before replacing the cam, but engine is very torqy in the lower rpm range. You should be happy with it. I got mine from Koller dodge off of ebay for just under $70 + shipping.

delaware emmisions
What kind of testing does delaware do. Jersey does a 50/15 dyno test. they run the jeep on a dyno at 15 mph for 30 seconds to test for emmisions. What size cam did you put in. Did it effect your brakes at all.
Thanks.

Here in DE they sniff the tailpipe @ idle. They have not yet gone to dyno testing like you have. The cam that I have is not a wild cam at all, basically what I would call a "RV" cam. I have the tag off of the box at work but not able to access it now. brake vacum is not a problem. the cam is not that wild at all.
