Lifter Peck

I have a 2004 Rubi with 84000 k.
I have a lifter or lifters pecking, with the engine cold sounds horrible even when you rev it up. Had it checked by a garage because i taught I had a cracked piston skirt. He told me to put STP oil treatment in it and drive it , because it is just a lifter (it does quieten it down). You still hear it when driving down the road just not as loud when warm.
Question can I just change the lifters without changing the cam, I know it is best to do both I was just wandering.

Thanks for all yuns opinion
