Leak Down Test - This was supposed to be easy!

Short version:
What Leak Down Tester will work with Jeep 4.0L engines???

Long version:
It happens to me all the time...an easy project takes WAY longer than expected for some stupid issue...

I've got a used 4.0L engine in my garage of unknown quality. I thought I would do a leak down test, and bought an OTC 5609 tester from Amazon.

The threads on the M14 adapter in the kit won't reach the threads in the spark plug holes.

That kit is going back, but now I need a different kit. Can anybody recommend a kit that will definitely work with the 4.0L engine?

Thanks!

Answering my own post...

I really hated to do it, but I bought the H****r F*****t Leak Down Tester. It was $33, and about half the price of the OTC 5609 from Amazon. It looks like the 14mm adapter is a little longer, so it should at least screw into the hole. I'll post back some more thoughts after I actually use it.

I used the Harbor Freight leak down tester earlier this week. It was a little finicky to use, but it got the job done. And the 14mm adapter worked fine with the 4.0L heads. The instructions are dead wrong about how to use it. (Hint: download the instruction PDF from the HF website - it had correct information). The error in the instructions was to "zero" out the meter with the spark plug hose unplugged. Then, plug in the hose. The manual has the instructions in the wrong order.

The ZJ 4.0L engine that I bought supposedly had 150K on it, but who really knows - it was already out of the vehicle. The leakdown tester showed pretty bad leakage past the rings on all cylinders. In the HF gauge, I was at 70-80% leakage on all cylinders. I didn't pay much for the engine, and I can get my money back out of it by selling the head, accessories and parts off of it. Or maybe it'll be the start of a stroker build!
