Ignorant D30 axle question.

The question isn't ignorant, I am. I've tried to educate myself about this to no avail.
So, the stock <3.54 open carrier is smaller than the stock >3.73 open carrier.
Are the axles different lengths to accommodate the carrier size differences or is the carrier size difference a non-issue?
What I'm looking to do is add a TrueTrac for 4.56 and wondering whether it mattered, axle-wise, what size carrier came from the OEM.

I know they're both 27 spline. I'm considering 30 spline but haven't figured that out yet, either. I'm thinking I would go with some RCVs if it all works out.
Any links to threads or references?

This would be for a '14 Sport S 2dr.

The carrier is different only in ring gear location to center of pin, everything else is the same

It's never easy, is it.

Fortunately, I'm patient.

But along the lines of "never easy"...trying to find fender flares. Need 'em...2.5" wider than stock.
They all seem to be flat/same width or flat/narrower or not JK or...
