New to the forum and a novice - I have 1983 CJ7 with a 258 inline 6 and a rebuilt Holley carb. Jeep sat cold for a few years and I recently got it running again. Car will fire up fine and idle consistently in neutral. But after driving, when I downshift from 3rd or 4th, the engine will stay running at high rpms (maybe 4000), as if the throttle is stuck. I can typically solve this by giving the gas pedal a good pump and then it settles down. Also, when I drive in 3rd or 4th gear, I can take my foot off the gas and the car will maintain a constant speed. Built in cruise control is nice but not exactly what I want. Something is stuck but not sure what yet. Carb? Wanted to get some thoughts from the experts before taking things apart.
