I think heads cracked but now not so sure

I had posted where did my antifreeze go so I hope I'm not effing this up by restarting a post but I have all the symptoms af a cracked head except no mily oil no residue on oil cap but do smell antifreeze not burning it at least UI dont think so. My check engine light came on after a cylinder 3 misfire code and after can of carb cleaner it was fine the check engine light was reset, I had almost run out of gas I was driving on fumes so put 3 gallons in it ran it for 5 mins shut it off got back in 10 min. later and misfiring and the ck engine light flashed then went solid so I drove home came to work light still on shut down hour later got in started up and no light whats going on?

Could be a cracked head, block, or just a blown head gasket leaking into the cylinders. Won't know until you do a compression test, pressure test and probably take off the head to inspect after you have results from testing to tell you what you are looking for. In the end, unless it passes all the above test, you will have to take it apart and inspect and have the machine shop test the head (pressure test or magnaflux).

Different problem warrants a new thread. One scenario...Over time the spark plug contact loses metal which makes the gap larger and larger until you get a misfire DTC and it runs poorly. Check your plugs.

As for a possible cracked head take your oil filler cap out of the valve cover. Then stand on a five gallon bucket peek down inside said oil cap hole and look for a 'clean streak' across the head betweeen #3 & #4 cylinder. No streak? Then you probably do not have the normal cracked head problem. If you see a clean streak across the head between #3 & #4 valve sets, start the engine then using then the throttle cable rev the engine and look for any sign of 'bubbling' They will be tiny. Use a good LED flashlight to illuminate the oil filler hole. CDo you see bubbles? Yes...you're boned.... been there done that and posted a thread about it.

EDIT. Check reply #6 to see what the clean streak may look like.
