Mark caps, loosen them up but don't take them off. Pry at will, the caps will keep it from comming out all at once. You can also try turning the pinion to "walk" the ring gear away from the pinion. Heat can be your friend when you put it back together (without a case spreader) with this much carrier preload.

Use a large flat tipped prybar under one of the ring gear bolts. You may have to slip a block of wood under it. Lean hard.
Oh, and be sure to mark the Powr Lok halves prior to dis-assembly. |

Having no spreader, my son and I used a tie down strap and a pry bar. Rap the strap around it and the pry bar few times, then just leverage it out. We were surprised how quickly the carrier came out. No need to ratchet it in either just twist it a few times and hold the strap with your hands.

I like to put a wrench on one of the ring gear bolts, butt it against the case and then turn the pinion and it will push the carrier out.

1998ZJ your way popped it free and jeepdaddy i used the pry method to get it out. awesome guys. one more thing, if i don't remove the bearings from the carrier, or the pinion from the case, backlash and depth shouldn't change when i put it back together, would it? thanks for your help again

Nothing should change. I would check the backlash or at leased run a pattern.
