HELP!!!! Transmission or Transfer Case

I have a 2005 Sport 6cyl TJ automatic Transmission. I was driving on the interstate about 60mph when the jeep gave a little shake then rolled to a stop engine was still running fine but it would not move fwd or rev. I tried to shift into 4H to see if front end would get me off the road but still nothing I put the transmission in Nuetral and still wouldn't roll I put the transfer case in neutral it would then roll. I put transfer case out of four wheel drive then put tranmission in drive gave it gas and it felt like it was still in four wheel drive but only moved about 6in and then wouldnt move again. Anyone ever had this happen? Is the transfer case shot? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

First question is which transfer case do you have? If it has a viscous clutch, it may be shot. Regardless, it appears to be transfer case related.

Pull the fill plug on the transfer case. Smell it. If it smells burnt, you have a transfer case problem for sure. Also check the oil level in the transfer case. It is possible that it had no oil left in it. Again, if so, time to change the transfer case.
