Help!! Power Train Control Module

I also posted this in the engine section. I was unsure which was best for a response:

Just took my jeep in today because it was acting funny. It turns out my power train control module has gone bad. The guy gave me 2 options. He said I could replace it for $400-500 or he could just disconnect it for a minimal price. He said it would run fine and everything if he just disconnected it but the check engine light would be perminately on. My questions are, which one would you recommend? Also, is this a fix I could do myself? If so, where could I get a power train control module and how do I go about installing it?

Thanks

Justin
