Help a noob out please - don't know where to start with Engine

I just bought a 1991 Wranger that is in pieces. It has a motor from a 1989 Cherokee (6cyl). I am assuming this is a 4.2 based on the research I have done. However, it looks to be missing pieces. Besides that, the engine compartment is basically empty and I don't even know where to start. I hope I am not in over my head here. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good website with parts diagrams that I could order parts from and maybe get a good idea what goes where.

Thanks,
Al

Sorry I can't help you with the Jeep much but when I bought my first Harley it was in a basket, ya a basket case.

All i did was buy a manual from Chilton (may not be the best) and started assembling.

As to being over your head, I know the feeling, keep it up and go for it, your call.

Luck,

I'd start with a Chiltons or FSM (Factory Service Manual). You might look at the Cherokee America webiste or :
http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/stroker.html
There are some other that might help. The motor you have is a Renix motor and your Cherokee had the HO version. They can be made to work, but some of the wiring is different. Most adapt the HO motor to a Renix bases Cherokee or Comanche (87-90). Look here for info:
http://www.rockmodified.com/2003/april/TB/tb_perf.htm
I have some pictures of my Comanche with the motor in it and the motor I replaced it with. I am not sure if that would help or not. If you have the wiring and electronics, I'd try and find a 91-95 motor in good shape. There is a temp plug in the 91-95 head that earlier and later motors don't have. ALso, is yours a manul or automatic?

Here's a link that might help:

Its for CJ's, but should be close. I am not sure how the emmission laws are there. Actually, I think its EPA law. You can't put in an earlier year for engine into your vehicle. Might check on it. Either manual or auto, you should get the same wiring harness. I'd probably look at a later Wrangler (TJ) for engine, wiring etc. You might look at wreckers or the rebuildable dealers in auto papers. You will be only intersted in the wiring and running components. You might be able to sell off any other good parts.
