I have an 05 TJ that needs some engine work and I thought it might be smart to have one of these handy. I've heard pros and cons for both. Does the forum have any preference?
I definitely agree here. Nothing better than an FSM. If you watch eBay or here for one used, it would only be a few dollars more. I actually have both Chiltons and Haynes, came with the YJ. I found that the info is pretty much the same even to being word for word. I think its the same publisher now anyway.
Factory is best. Chilton's is acceptable. For domestic vehicles, I find Haynes manuals most useful for evening up odd workbench legs (they're okeh for imports, but I've not had good luck with them for domestics. And, I consider them to be incomplete...)
Every time I go to haynes or chilton with a problem that I don't know, it says to see a qualified mechanic. Useless unless you are looking up how to check the oil.
The Haynes/Chiltons these days try to cover too many years per vehicle, the info is so diluted as to barely be useful. If you can find a used or extremely discounted Haynes/Chilton it might be worth getting. Provides very basic info, that's about it.
You can find the PDF of the FSM online if you look. way better. then print what you need and dont worry about ruining it.
