Hello everyone, I've had this issue for a few weeks now, just kinda been dealing with it, anyways, my 4.0 tj is having a rough time starting, it will just crank and crank and I can hear some grinding noises and it will eventually start. While it's cranking it will act like it's going to start then just go back to cranking again, as if the starter was to engage then stop. I get a CEL after about 10 seconds of cranking but it goes away when it finally starts up. I took a look underneath at the starter and the dust cover ( I think that's what it's called ) where the starter mounts on, a bolt backed out and that cover is bent away from the transmission, could this be causing the starting issue? Any help is appreciated! Thank you

Yes it could. How long ago was last tune up?

The last tune up was around May, I joined the forums a few years ago, I just don't ever post, usually just search and find what I'm looking for. Anyways, could I just bend that dust cover back and call it a day or would it just be as easy to remove it completely?

Bending it would be OK. Removing it isn't s great idea. Don't want sticks and debris in there.

Will try it and see what happens, I'm currently I Arizona and my jeep is in North Carolina so it'll have to wait till I get back

Also try this. Turn the key to ON and wait about 5-7 seconds before going to start. If it fires right up you may have an issue with the pressure regulator allowing the system to bleed down. It's on the pump assy in the tank and is a common issue.

Hmm will try that also when I get back! I'll keep you guys updated, thanks!
