Is this a front gearbox vent?

I was under my stock 2008 Wrangler X confirming the disconnect of the transfer case cable (thanks to other threads here) and noticed a rubber hose (.5 in dia or so) hanging loose from above. It has a metal fitting on it and was oily. I also noticed an opening near the top of the front gearbox which would accept this fitting. I followed the rubber hose to the top of the engine and it is not connected to anything, but is capped off with a white, plastic part. Is this just a vent line from the gearbox? What keeps it securely attached? Thanks.
