Ford 8.8 axle: 28 vs 31 spline
Is there any way to tell the difference externally between the 28 and 31 spline axle shafts?

Essentially what I'm looking for is a way to tell I wasn't ripped off if I hire a local guy to do an 8.8 swap on my 97 TJ.

What did it come out of ?

Explorer = 31 spline
4x4 Ranger= 31 spline

I don't remember offhand if there are any markings on the housing that will tell you. Have you checked any of the numerous websites that cover the 8.8? Most of them will have a section at the beginning of the info that covers axle identification.

When all else fails, pull the shaft and count.

The only Ranger that came with the 31 spline shafts were the FX4 level IIs, the rest had 28 spline shafts.

I'm looking at using a local guy who sources his axles from local junkyards and the like.

His price, installed w/ front gears to match, is less than ECGS shipped.

No real reason not to trust him, but I want to make sure he isn't buying 28 spline and sticking them under Jeeps figuring nobody will know.

Disc brakes = 31 splines, from an Explorer

I used to own a Ranger Incognito (Mazda B4000) and researched this topic heavily. Besides, you want disc brakes because they're easier to service and clean/dry better when wheeling.

So if it has original disc brakes it's a 31? Cool.

As you notes, I want the disc brakes anyway.
