Ford 8.8 28 spline gears swapped to 31 spline

So came across a ford 8.8 earlier and it had 4.10 gears in it and limited slip but im 99% sure its 28 spline so i was wondering if anyone knew if a set of 4.10 gears from a 28 spline rear would fit a 31 spline ford 8.8. Been planning the swap for a while but im not gonna swap out my 8.25 for a 28 spline 8.8 any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I can see D35 -> 8.8 but if you have the 8.25 then why bother? My XJ buddies wheel the crap out of their 8.25's.

As for the gear swap, you would definitely need different side gears (which have the splines).

The reason for the swap was just because it was a cheap way to regear and get a strong axle with it. I have been searching for an 8.8 with 410s and found one just not quite the right one but i am reasonably sure i also found another one at the local u pull it in an explorer. I have the front taken care of for 4.10s thats the real reason cuz its not gonna cost me much of anything to do a swap and regear at the same time.

The 28 splines came in rangers, and i'd say its strength would be comprable to a cryco 8.25. The 31 spline came in explorers and were about 25% stronger + 95 and up had disc brakes. The majority of explorer 8.8's had 3.73 and traclok limited slip. 4.10's are out there but harder to find. A decent set of gears can be found for these with a master rebuild kit for less than 250$.

The explorer 31 spline is 1" narrower than the factory cherokee axle. The ranger 28 spline axle was typicaly narrower than that depending on year(4" narrower 90-92 and 2" narrower 93-09) So just swapping the axles and spider gears will not work. And the Axle tubes are smaller in dia too. If your axle tube is 3.25" dia and necks down at the brake you have 31 spline, if it is 2.80" and does not neck down, you have 28 spline.
