Exhaust sounds deeper and check engine light comes on?

I went wheeling this weekend and bumped some rocks on the undercarriage, no noticeable damage but my exhaust has a lower rumble sound and now 2 days later my check engine light just came on, any ideas?

You probably popped open a crack in your exhaust system and one of the O2 sensors has picked up free oxygen in the exhaust stream.

Start where the down pipe(s) connect to the exhaust manifold.

Look for where the exhaust is making that rumble sound you mentioned...

Ok, theres no puffing sound coming from the front like i hear from other peoples leaks, it just sounds deeper like maybe something cracked in the catalytic converter.

Now you need to scan the trouble codes and see what they indicate.

If you have an android phone, the $5 Torque app and a cheap $15 ELM327 Bluetooth OBDII device is the best investment I ever made. It's like having a nice $200+ scan tool for nothing. Comes in very handy. Not only can you look up and clear codes, but you can look at live data from the computer. You'll be able to see if the O2 sensors are stuck lean because of extra oxygen in the exhaust and not just guess based on the codes.

Nope, i have an iphone. Ill be going to advance auto in an hour or so to get the code scanned.

Also, something rattles in the undercarriage and it sounds like its something with the exhaust, like something bumping against the tube. It only happens when i start the car, then after 10-15 seconds it stops and i cant get it to do it. It only does it at the idle speed, about 1000-1100 when the car is just started. If i give it some gas, in neutral, it goes away and once the rpms fall back down it will go back to doing it.

That could be a loose heat shield on the muffler. My question to you is, Was that noise there before your little 'full contact' off road adventure?

Do the key trick to retreive any codes. Off to On 3 times quickly, leaving it on "ON" and it will display the code where the odometer reads.
