Everyone please vote _________.
High mileage I6 4.0L (230,000 Km), what engine oil is better for reducing oil consumption and still allow for good engine performance.
15W-40 or 20W-50

Holy crap, do the 4.0s last that long normally? I have 130k on mine, and was planning on a swap in 2 years maybe.

I run 20W-50 in ALL/ANY engine that has 100,000 miles or more, and it helps them last without repair for well over 200,000 miles, and much more. If you search the threads, you will find many topics on this, and my position on 20-50 is further explained.

AHH why dont yah just replace the cheap valve seals, pull the valve cover, if you can't charge the cylinder with air to keep the valves up pull the spark plug which need to do anyway get rope that fits thru the hole long enough to put a fair amount in turn engine over till rope is pushing up on valves, compress valve springs pull off seals and replace put back together repeat thru all cylinders.

Switched over to 20W-50 yesterday and the jeep has never run better. Time will tell if it consumes less oil. But the horsepower and top end is up substantially.

I basically throw out the service manual specs after 100,000, since they do not apply to most things at that point, LOL. 5W-30 and 0W-30 oil is like putting tap water in your motor, and 10W-40 just doesn't cut it at 100,000.
Every vehicle I have had has run much better from a switch to 20W-50 at 100,000 or close to 100k: more HP, less oil consumption, better mileage, higher oil pressure, cleaner oil at oil changes (hence running better).
Good Luck!

What about synthetic? I been running synthetic and I don't remember seeing 20/50 as an option at the stores I shop. Should I look around for a 20/50 synthetic on mine then?
NOTE: I like the synthetic, so far in 3 years had almost nothing wrong with it.

As I found out 20W-50 is used most frequently in motorcycle engines. In canada you can pick it up at any Canadian Tire store. Not sure about the U.S. but try around its not that exotic, and the kind I put in is a synthetic, not sure if it comes plain old petroleum based that heavy.
good luck

For some reason, I seem to remember seeing synthetic in 20-50, but not sure. It is widely available in standard oil. I'm not an advocate of synthetic, not that it is crap, just that I don't justify the difference in price. Duration between changes is NO different, since the same "dirt" accumulates in your oil anyway and needs to be changed out. Anyway, without going into that discussion , you may be able to find synthetic in 20W-50.
