I had a question about Engine swapping. I have a 91 Cherokee 4.0HO and the engine is near its last days. I also have an 05 Wrangler Unlimited 4.0 that I got from a slavage. It has been wrecked but the engine is in great shape and it turns over, only has 19k miles. The transmission in the wrangler is auto, standard in teh Cherokee...
Is a swap even possible?
I am used to throwing chevy small blocks around, what kind of a nightmare would I be in for with this...

the 91 will be obdI, the tj will be obdII.
beside that, assuming you swapped the whole drivetrain, will be about as easy as it gets...
compare the 2 motors side by side, noting any extra sensor on the later model, and see if you can convert it to obdI and stick with your stock harness from the xj.
to make the auto a manual tranny, you'd need to wap the flywheel from the xj onto the new motor, and hopefully the bellhousing is the same?

I am putting an '03 into an '88 Comanche. So yes it is possible. There are a few points to keep in mind. First the newer head has smaller exhaust ports. So you may loss some power there. I also think the 91-95 head has a temp sensor in it, while latter heads don't.
On my '03 block, the bosses for the engine mounting brackets were a bit different. On one side one of the bosses was lower. Just make up a space. I think mine was .965 or .915 in length. On the other side (drivers i think) on of the bosses is two long. You will need to cut down the boss or cut and weld the mounting bracket. I had the mounting bracket cut and welded. You can mess up a bracket all you want and get another one. mess up the block then its trouble.
Also, the oil pressure gauge was in a different location. It was towards the rear on the passenger side of the block. It is on the oil filter boss in earlier years. Not a major problem.
So I'd use the '05 block, sell the head. Should be worth $200-250. Make the mods for the engine mounting brackets. Also, you might need a special bearing to adapt the manual tranny. Check Advance Adapters, I think $50. I'd use the intake manifold from the '05, but keep your Throttle body. You would have to modify your serpentine setup some. Check Go-Jeep web site.

Intro and Notes
So, before outlining the proceedure (a.k.a. "key trick") to get the codes, a few things to note:
1) You may have to set the parking brake for the codes to show
2) On older models, the blink-spacing is not always perfectly uniform, so if you see 23 23, it's probably just a single 55 since codes are not repeated (55 is end of codes - it's normal)
3) On newer models with a digital odometer, the codes are usually displayed on the odometer rather than blinking the check engine light.
4) When the computer indicates major failure, it can activate "Limp In" mode, which guesses about data to compensate for sensor failure, allowing you to get the car to a mechanic. One major symptom of this is losing third and/or fourth gear on autos.
The "Key Tricks"
Older (OBDI) models - Start with the ignition off. Within five seconds, switch the key on, off, on, off, on. ("On" is NOT "Start" and "Off" is NOT "Lock"). The "check engine" light will flash. Count the flashes. Each code is a two digit code, so a (for example) 23 would be FLASH FLASH (pause) FLASH FLASH FLASH (long pause). It will never flash more than 9 times, so watch for those pauses!
Newer (OBDII) models - Put the key into the ignition, push down the odometer reset button, then turn the key to RUN with your finger on the button - and then release the button. The odometer will go through 1111111 through 999999, then display the car's serial number. It will then show the error codes (it might show them starting with P). If this method does not work, try the OBDI method.
Older Model Computer Codes (OBDI) - IMPORTANT! Codes may be different for newer vehicles starting circa 1996.
11 No ignition reference signal detected during cranking OR timing belt skipped one or more teeth; OR loss of either camshaft or crankshaft position sensor.
12 Battery or computer recently disconnected
13 MAP sensor or vacuum line may not be working
14 MAP sensor voltage below .16V or over 4.96V
15 No speed/distance sensor signal
16 Loss of battery voltage detected with engine running
17 Engine stays cool too long (bad thermostat or coolant sensor?)
17 (1985 turbo only): knock sensor circuit
21 Oxygen sensor signal doesn't change (stays at 4.3-4.5V). Probably bad oxygen sensor

If you get hot rough idle and stalling, especially on deceleration, accompanied by flooded engine and difficulty restarting, that can be a bad MAP sensor causing the O2 sensor to try to compensate. If you get poor cold driveability, stumbling and bucking, and acceptable warm driving with poor gas mileage (a drop of 10 mpg or more), that is usually the O2 sensor.

The bellhousing should be the same. They didn't change the bolt pattern on that. If you keep the same electronics from you '91 you should be OK. The latter 4.0's (99-1/2 and up) have a distributorless ignition system. Don't worry, they still have the hole for the distributor. It has a camshaft sensor in it. I do have the engine in the vehicle. I put in a NV3550. I need to figure out the cross member stuff. Others have done this or used latter year engine blocks. I remember another person who swapped in an '03. He cut down the boss on one side. I'd keep the ODB I system and your present drive train. With a manual its no problem. The only upgrade might be an external slave cylinder.
