Engine Serial Numbers and Build date don't make sense.

Ive spent the entire evening searching the internet trying to figure out what year the motor is in my keep. The motor was replaced by the prior owner.

The case is "EF3235444", which tells me it's a 81-85.

The build date code reads "908CL30" which does not jive with anything i've seen. it's tough to see the first 2 digits in the picture.

Anyone else have any ideas? I see gthe engine code "C" but not "CL".

Ideas?

August 30, 1989. CL is probably 258 whereas MX is 4.0

If you own a Renix Jeep, you'll want to check this out.

Hear me out on this one.

I think it's a 1979, not 89. The serial number on the case indicates that these motors were used from 81-85. My best guess is that this motor left the plant in August of 79, and was eventually placed in a model year 1981 Jeep...in 1980? Clear as mud.

From everything I've read the "C" does indicate that it is a 258, when referring to that year range. However, I have not read ANYTHING that mentions a CL.

Wow, now my head is spinning. If it IS a 232, it was built in August 31, 1976.

Is there any chance they stamped a 232 with the case # EF3235444?

Where is the head stamped? I couldnt see any numbers.....I assumed it was covered by the intake and exhaust manifold.

So that's what the serial # reads on the block, which means 81-85. However, there is a "CL" not a "C" in the build date code. That is what is throwing me off.

My point exactly...........I have no idea. From what I read, the C means it's the 258, but the L? No idea.

Maybe "LOW COMPRESSION?"?

No idea.
