Engine codes

Can anyone tell me what the 2 engine codes 12 and 45 mean? The haynes manual does not list these. The "check engine" light stays on. Sometimes I can clean the two O2 sensors and disconnect the battery and this will clear the codes for a while but they still come back.

OK I found out that 12 is the number that preceeds the code output. On 1984-1986 code 45 means that it has a rich exhaust, so is this the same on 1991 and later models? I checked the exhaust and replaced one of the oxygen sensors but it still gave me the check engine light. do I need to change out the down stream sensor @ the cat?

Im not sure of what the code is for you model, but if you isolated the problem and replaced it the computer will still display the check engine light for a while. It automatically resets after a number of restarts, but you just need to pull both battery cables off to reset it. Good Luck

I just moved from Florida..so I think that COLD air in the morning may have something to do with it. Just get used to it..and if it pisses ya off to bad..There is always an ICE PICK!...

Yeah we had a high in the mid 60's today and my wife said she noticed that the light went off when stopped using the heater!?! I don't get it. I wonder if there may be a recall on the computer?

goto Car Point you can sign up to have them email you if there are any recalls on your Jeep.

AllPar has a list of all the different codes.

Thanks, Bonehead99
the allpar site helped out, but code 45 had to do with a turbo sensor and I do not beleive that the XJ even has a Turbo. But thanks for the sites anyhow, may come in handy in the future!!
