Dropped plastic in valve cover

Forum newbie here, I read quite often but this is my first post. I apologize if this has been covered in another thread, please point me in that direction, I really need some expert help.

I have a 97 Wrangler, 4.0L, smog check coming up. Needed to replace the PCV valve and decided to replace the PCV elbow at the front of the cover since half of the edge was broken off, and I figured the smog guy would notice that.

It cracked into pieces when I tried to get it out and I lost a little piece (About 1/4" across) in the valve cover. Couldn't see it, couldn't find it.

Do I need to take the valve cover off and try to find it, or will it just work itself to the oil pan? Will it hurt my engine? I was afraid to even start the engine to see how well it ran with the new PCV. I really need to get it fixed (or stop worrying, LOL) before I go back to work Monday.

I feel like such a dope for dropping the piece in there. Please help me...

Take the valve cover off and find it. The VC is pretty easy to remove. Just get a new gasket.

Definitely a risk plugging up an oil port.

What PCV valve was you attempting to replace? Last time I looked the 4.0L used in the TJs didn't have one.

mdm, I replaced the pieces called "PCV elbows" at the front and rear of the valve cover but you're right, they aren't actual PCV valves like the one on my Firebird.
I only replaced them because the edge was cracked and partially missing, the smog guy mentioned it two years ago. I figured if I showed up with them still like that this year he might get froggy and not pass me.
But all is well! Piece recovered, Jeep running like a champ.
