Driving a figure 8

I have seen it mentioned before, what I do not understand is:

1) What flaw or inconsistency this maneuver exposes? And how is it exposed?
2) Where should this maneuver be performed and what should be the gear configuration?

if you have the all time 4x4, np249 t case then driving in a figure 8 will show if the viscous coupler is bad. if you drive in a 8 and the front wheels hop and bind then the vc is bad if everything is smooth then your vc is good.

Hop & bind, how does that feel to the driver? I guess I am asking what is hop & bind?
I am guessing this maneuver is done on a flat surface at slow speed with 4 LO engaged?

When you make a hard right turn or left you'll feel the jeep become jumpy like, or chatter like, anything other than smooth.
You most likely have awd and the 249 unless the previous owner changed it already.

In 4lo it doesn't have any issue making a hard turn, like if you turn the wheel full lock and try and make a circle ?

Mine is Quadratech AWD, all stock with 195K. I did the figure 8 today in AWD mode, didn't notice anything unusual.

Did you do the turns right after starting.it up or after.you drove it and everything is warm, cold t-case won't act up, you have to be at temp and then just make any turn at full lock
