Does a new radiator need a petcock?

I put a new performance radiator in my CJ7 10 years ago. Fast forward to now... I pulled the plug where a drain petcock should be(?) and drained my coolant. The plug goes back in tightly, but coolant leaks past. I don't remember why I originally put a plug in. Should I have installed / soldered a petcock in when I bought the radiator 10 years ago? Is there something that I can wrap the plug in to make it seal? There are no threads in the radiator plug hole. Before today, I was pulling my lower radiator hose off (and now suddenly remember why...) to change my coolant.

Thank you for the reply. I am sure teflon tape would patch it just fine; I may have even applied it when I originally installed the plug. What I'm really trying to ask is what is the correct fix. When we buy a new radiator, is it assumed that we will weld on a petcock or are we expected to just put in a (tefloned) plug?

I'm closing this out and commenting for anyone else who might run across this situation. I removed my radiator and paid a local shop about $30 to weld in a new petcock nut (w/ a petcock valve). - JustAl -
