My D70HD is narrowed by the PO as far as I can tell but here are some pics for size comparisons of stuff:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Did you read my first reply? If you absolutely must have 5.38s then you need the 14b. Otherwise you are stuck with either 5.13s or 5.86s in the D70. The D70 has MANY more gearing options(to match the D60s of course)... you can get up to a 7.17 ratio ![]() IIRC the 14b and D70s both use the same wheel bearing parts(spindle nuts, wheel bearings, maybe seals as well?) so definitely scrounge all those parts off both axles for spare stuff. Are you sure your 73" wide D70 isn't for SRW already? A lot are 65 to 68" wide with DRW hubs IIRC. If you EVER want more than 5.38s, go with the D70. I love my 5.86s with 40s and 4.0 stock motor so consider that. 5.13s should be fine for what you want on 37s or 38s. If 5.38s will be enough for you even when you get bigger tires then go for the 14b. edit: As for clearance... the D70 uses the same diff cover as a D60. There is just a tiny bit of the diff "chunk" showing all the way around. Going by that a D70 isn't THAT much less clearance than a D60.

yeah its weird that it is a drw 73". on the dana 70 thread there was another guy that had one. his was also a d70hd. but it is defintely a drw hub. brakes bigger than a small block v-8
not really but you know what i mean. talked to my dad today, he said it came out of a 78 3+3 chevy dually camper special. i can run 5.13s no problem. im runnin a ls1 4l60e 241OR t-case. might even have a 6l80e transmission found. so 5.13s is ok. how much clearance do you have with 40s.

not bad. yjcrawler measured his 14b shaved up to the bottom bolt but still retains it, on 37s he said around 11". the only thing that holds me to the 70 is the 4"tubes 1/2" thick. undestructible with my setup. do you know if the d70hd axle can be resplined. if so, thats my axle. if it does let me down, i'll swap to 14b cause we have more.

What do you mean resplined? You just get different spider gears, or order a 35 spline locker when the time comes.
Mine is 35 spline 1.5" shafts.

But if your looking for a simple bomb proof axle that can take years of abuse just run a 14 bolt. That SRW axle you have is 67"s wms to wms, those DRW's if there cab & chassie then they will be 63"s. So that's in the range your looking for. If my 14 bolt didn't come with a detriot i would of just welded it. For me a shaved 14-B was the way to go. I got the axle from the junkyard with a detriot for next to nothing ( under 100.00 ). Like i said in the PM my shaved 14-B has more ground clearance than my HP 60 front. So there not a boat anchor as most claim to be. Plus with 39's i could care less, just punch it and work your way threw. its a nice feeling when your not breaking any axle's. Jason.

its got to be a great feeling. i backed up a rock in tellico with a 4cyl and 35s to get out of the way for oncoming traffic. backed up about 2 feet it bounced one time and destroyed the turdy five. axle came out. had to hold it in with a log and some rope. i going to run one these big boys this time around. you guys are doing it, beating the piss out of them and drivin them back. man its got to be great.

jason is the detroit in the 14b aggressive like a dana 44 detroit. like does it rachet real bad when turning. my duramax has the big 14b with gov. loc. its real smooth, but dont know how long that unit would last in the woods.

Tons of people use the gov lock on Pirate since it's basically a Detroit anyways.
FWIW the Detroit in my 70 is unnoticable to me. I'm sure being 110" WB instead of 93.5" or whatever is what really helps. I get no funny clicking or noises or anything, only noticable thing is when you hit the gas hard in a tight turn it will spin the tires and chirp them. Also I have a manual trans, in neutral or with the clutch in going around turns slowly(like a parkinglot) the detroit ratchets and clanks the entire driveline with it. You can hear everything in the trans and t-case slapping back and forth. It's normal from what I've heard.

Haha thanks... I don't drive it as much as I'd like(not too keen on keeping it at the apartment with all the money I have in it... mainly wheels and tires) but I take it for short drives whenever I get the chance. I need to get it ready for offroading and all that but it will be driven 5+ hrs to trails and back... hopefully

My detroit is just like a spool. Its allways on, i get some plow steer from time to time like a spool. But it was in there and free. If it was open or a GOV bomb it would of be welded now.
i trailer mine only, the only road driving i do is down the raod from my house to my wood guys land. Jason.
