Dana 44 question

Alright guys I'm fairly new to this. I'm looking at swapping my 35 for a 44, I've already found one with same gears, out of a tj. Will I need to replace drive shaft as well? I have seen some yes and no answers out there. What else will I need?

Thanks

Also this is my DD, I plan on getting a sye and replacing driveshaft down the road just don't have the cash right now. Should I pick up the Dana 44 and wait? Has a 4" lift with the tcase drop right now.

I believe as long as the u-joints are the same that it should be a direct swap over. Good luck, interested in some Rubicon Lockers? I've got the whole kit-n-kaboodle up for sale.

The D44 is certainly bigger so I can't see how the D35 shaft will work. At best you will be left with very little or zero compression in the slip yoke.

I like your plan B: Pick up the D44 now but wait and do the install at the same time as your SYE.

P.S. The proper way to do this is measure for your driveshaft AFTER the axle and SYE are installed. This means there will be some down time unless a local driveshaft shop can set you up on short notice. My local driveshaft shop will normally turn around an order in a few hours.

If you have an aftermarket driveline in your jeep right now they are generally made with enough slip that a 35 should fit a 44. I suggest you install and double check. (as long as the 44 is out a TJ Non- Rubicon)

If it is the stock driveline then you will have to shorten it roughly one inch (1") to an inch and a quarter (1 1/4").

Rubicons use a 1330 Driveshaft ujoint.
All other Jeeps (with VERY FEW exceptions) use a 1310.

SO your driveshaft will not swap, without work...

Well it's actually coming out of a regular tj. It was a factory added option when the guy bought the jeep new. So I wouldn't need to get the adapter right?

Reg TJ will use a 1310, same as what you have now I would bet.

As for length, IF you have a lift and you have teh correct length arms, or they can be adjusted to be correct length and the wheelbase is back to stock at ride hieght, then you should be able to use your DS you have now. If it was made correctly.

but you seem to have a few variables that make it a no possitive yes/no.
