Dana 30 spindle play

I am changing out my 2 front wheel bearings and noticed that the spindle has some play in it. Is this normal?

Thats very very vague. What yr? Model? Where is the "play"? Pictures so that we can decipher what maybe you're describing yet, is maybe not the correct terms, or part names, etc.

Sorry, I had taken a video and uploaded it to Youtube but being a new member this site wouldn't let me link to the video. I have since sought help elsewhere and determined that, no, it's not normal, so I ordered a new spindle bearing kit. I just tried it again and it still won't let me. Nice, huh?

It's an 83 CJ8 with Dana 30 front. The whole axle shaft that sticks out of the spindle wobbles side to side and up and down.

Unfortunately to keep spam down you have to have 10 posts to include a link/image in your post. You can include the URL as text and another member can link/embed it for you. Some wiggle in the outer shaft is 'normal' as they don't fit extremely tight in the spindle bearing, but would need to see your video to see how much you have.

That is normal.

The stub axle floats in a torrington (flat) bearing pressed in the spindle. The bearing isn't designed to carry the stub solidly, but instead relies on the locking hub/block to support the outer end of the axle. Stub axle movement around the inner diameter of the spindle is normal.

You can pull the spindle to insure the inner and outer seals are good and check the bearing for grease. These bearings are neglected and are almost never serviced.

If something is bad, BK1 kit should have all the pieces.

I ended up taking the other wheel bearing off last night and that side was the same, so perhaps it is normal. I ended up changing out the spindle bearing and seals anyway since it's so easy to do and not that expensive. Here is the text link. https: //youtu.be/zGcWjPi4csw (I added a space after the : )

That looks pretty normal. No hurt in replacing the spindle bearing if you want, but no big need as the axle will self center with the hub installed and when it spins.

Also, unless I just can't see them in the video, go buy some jack stands. Don't want to see a Jeep and its owner out of commission if the jack fails.

The stands were to the right of the video, supporting the frame. Great advice!
