Dana 30 pinion shim question

I am in the process of rebuilding a D30R from a Cherokee, and during disassembly, I noticed there were no shims under the inner pinion bearing race or under the inner pinion bearing. Is it possible to have no pinion bearings at all?

When you say D30R do you mean a reverse cut, high pinion Dana 30? If so it is shimmed with the oil slinger, and some have a baffle too.

Yes, reverse cut. It did have an oil slinger and baffle.

Yep, the factory used a variable thickness oil slinger to shim the pinion. The baffle also counts towards the overall shim size.

Your master install kit should come with a new slinger that is much thinner, usually around .030" thinner, than the stock one.

Very cool! That is really helpful.

Alright, the setup kit did not come with a slinger or baffle. I damaged the baffle trying to get the original race out, but the slinger is good but VERY thick. What next?

Thanks.

I personally wouldn't run without the baffle or slinger with the high pinion, they help trap oil for the pinion bearings. As for the slinger it will be an issue if you need a smaller shim size for the new gears, that's way a food install kit comes with a new, thinner, slinger.

I used an East Coast Gear Supply (ECGS) master install kit which came with a new baffle and thinner slinger. Some people just throw them out, again personally I wouldn't. Maybe try calling ECGS, they might be able to send you the parts you need.

The original slinger was 0.060"!! I traded a buddy for one half as thick.
