Are you talking about the Cummins that is put in the 1 ton Dodge trucks? I ask because that particular I6 turbo diesel probably weighs in at over 1000 lbs. Not to mention it is a massive (dimensions-wise) engine. I dont think it would be practical in a YJ. I would think a small block V8 gas motor with about 350-400 ft-lbs of torque should be plenty and it doesnt weigh that much.

Cummins makes a very nice 4cyl diesel that might fit, definately be closer than the 1000# beast in the Dodge. The smaller engine is used in panel trucks and delivery vans, you should be able to find one in a junk yard.
Another posibility is a John Deer diesel, they make a plethora of sizes and have great service and parts options, especially in rural areas. |

That engine would tear the YJ a new A$$ hole! DONT DO IT! 600lbs torque too much for a YJ!

The ISB in the dodge trucks weighs too much for a jeep to handle. The 4bt that is readily available in bread trucks as well as fed-ex/ups vans is more along the lines of what you would want. Most 4bt cummins would require no computer and utilizes a fuel shut-off solenoid to control the engine i.e no spark advance or timing issues. The 4bt can be modified in much the same manner as the ISB dodge uses (pre- 1998 12 valves), they use a mechanically driven injector pump as well as a mechanical fuel lift pump. With a fuel plate ground to the proper diminsions and a little more air (read BIGGER TURBO) and a little bigger exhaust these can be monsters. These engines ARE capable of 500 ft. lbs of torque without internal engine modifications. I have been thinking of this swap since the day I bought my jeep but I just don't see the rest of the YJ holding up. You really would need to go to a serious axle (read D60++) to handle the torque these engines are capable of. The transmission and transfer case are easy enough to swap as these engines quite often come mated to gm Turbo 400's that can be grabbed up easily from pre 87' chevy 3/4 ton 4x4's with a NP-205 already attached! My biggest concern (read COST concern) is finding a final drive that would stay behind that combo. I would LOVE to see someone make it happen but sadly it does not look like it will be me. Good luck to any who try and if help be needed in the southeast to make it happen, let me know I would be willing to help as much as possible!

hello !! i have a 4 cyl Cummins Turbo Diesel in my CJ5, get great milage
, lots of tourque though, and the hydrolic clutch is crazy hard, takes all my body weight to push it in, had to custom fab a muffler, but on the bright side NO LIFT LAWS ON DIESEL !! (i live in ma, we have a lift law of 2.5 inches, not like any of us listin anyway) Pics of my jeep on the link below, but you might have to cut and paste the link ![]()

oh forgot some important things, the frame/stearing compnents could not support the tourque, so it would fly right off the road, my jeep has a custom built frame, stearing parts and shifter, no one sold one that would work, so we had one custom made, little thing but important, make sure you put a lock on your fuel tank, (cap) prevents any "mistakes" someplaces dont let you pump your own fuel, better safe than sorry, not everyday they see someone pull in and ask for deisel in a jeep.

I have been looking at a jeep that has a 5 cyl mercedes diesel motor. can anyone advise if they have see or heard of such a thing. I want the diesel motor in the jeep but dont want to get stuck with some thing I cant finish. The motor is installed and it looks like it was running at some point. There is a hole in the oil pan and for that reason I cant hear it run. Any help would be great...
