Cummins 4bt in a CJ-7

Hey guys,

I have a XJ right now that has a golen stroker in it. Lately ive been wanting to start up a CJ-7 project. I have the CJ picked out and will buy it in the spring (owner is keeping it over the winter). But i am planning a full restore for it.

Lately a couple buddies of mine have been tossing around the idea of throwing in a Cummins 4bt in a CJ.

Has anyone done this before? Is it more cost effective to just throw a chevy 350 in it? I just think the idea of putting a diesel in a CJ would be fun.

Any tips guys?

-Brendan

I am planning and executing this build. Your hardest part will be finding a cheap 4BT. They are out there, you just gotta look. Engine will run you 2K-2.5K and I'm not sure what tranny you will be using, but a NV4500 will be almost a thousand more. It's possible though, if that what you want to do.

Go over to Pirate in the hardcore Jeep section and look up project "eat me". He got his engine from a Dolly Madison truck. It is a long thread with a lot of info. It turned out nice when he was done.

It will be an expensive project. The 4bt is a heavy engine so you will have to deal with that. You will need to upgrade your frame, and rest of the drive train to handle the extra torque. Don't get me wrong, I love the 4bt but I believe it is too much motor for a small jeep.

When it comes to power, too much is never enough.

Here's one ...

I am also planning a 4bt conversion for my 79 CJ7. I'm not quite ready yet to buy the engine, but I noticed one listed on ebay up around Toledo OH with 58k miles. Link below:

CUMMINS 4BT 4B 4BTAA ENGINE MOTOR 3.9 58613 MILES RUNS:eBay Motors (item 110452798510 end time Nov-08-09 15:40:53 PST)

I'm watching at this point and wondering if I can scrape enough nickels together to get this one. No bids, currently at $1700 and within driving distance from Southern IN (I'm over in Columbus). Since I'm not quite ready, I thought I'd share.
