Crate or remanufactures engines

Have been searching the forum for information about replacement engines for my 2000 TJ 4.0L. The search bar yielded very little information so I am starting this to help people get a baseline cost of options out there in the market. I welcome all to add input and/or feedback. I was not sure what to title the thread to help search bar lookups but this works.

The first place I called was Jasper Engine. Total out the door was $4386 ($3471after core credit) this is a nearly 100% complete engine with instal kit that included all hoses and gaskets water pump and oil pan. I believe it was a 3 year warranty. I was told its the same OE 0331 cast head and that they only crack at high mileage (I think most of us with 0331 experience would beg to differ) either way it's all new component internally. Water pump and oil pan come installed.

Second place was Barnett's at $1775 (delivered) $500 core (30 days to return before charged) 5 year unlimited miles free parts and labor (yes they pay the shade tree mechanic $15 an hour up to 10 hours and they pay for parts) each engine is claimed to be hand built by a engine machinist who knows and loves to build engines. Possible to have a welded 0331 head but they claim to only who minimal welding repairs and usually opt for new head.

Third I found was Dollar Engine true test engine (sound hokey but..) they claim all engines any make any model $1295.95. I could not find any contact info of checkout bar (actually was a suggestion from a JF thread) I also found no real warranty info.

Powertrain Products Inc. $2999, 5 year unlimited mile warranty +200 freight. I wasn't given any core info I believe it's built into the total cost.

That's what I got to yesterday

Please feel free to add any info.
Thanks

I called autozone in Flagstaff, AZ they had three long blocks to offer
Surefire- $1948.99 +510 core (2613.60) 3year unlimited
Pro (something, my cell phone get bad service where I live) $2147.99 +510 3year unlimited
Last option I couldn't understand the mumble but it was $2899.99 +300 4 year unlimited.

O'Reilly (flagstaff) long block $1998 +510 core 3 year unlimited. I think it's the same Surefire brand as autozone.

I would rule out both Barnett's and Jasper, based on what they said about the 0331 head. You don't want it welded, and you can't trust a company who basically lies to you...

Hesco, Golen, S&J and Titan are all names that I've heard.

What about your local rebuild shop?

I called the most local shop (150 miles away) and they said worst case $2500 that's a new bare head and reusing my valve parts.

Gearheadengine.com quoted me $2450 -510 core= 1949 w/ 3year unlimited
Or 2166-510= 1656 w/1year unlimited.
I have heard about their head selection yet. Waiting for an email.

I'll look into it thanks. This is stressful. At least my snapshot isn't going anywhere. Lol

Jc Whitney and quadratec are great places, I believe 1795.00 from quadratec long block new. To bad you weren't closer id offer to do it for a reasonable price. New head always never welded or repaired. Good rule of thumb, Jc Whitney always matches prices and have good parts

Haven't looked there yet. 4wd.com sell ATK. I've heard good things about them plus price match as well. Definitely looking into JC.
Thanks.

So, I have run into a small issue now concerning the position of the oil filter. Only JC Whiteny has ask which position my oil filter is. Does this matter and is the block still the same? I know mine, currently, is at an angle and not straight off the block. I do remember a few 2000 I looked at before mine and the filter was straight off the block. Which is the correct oil filter position?

I'm running a Marshall Engines 4.2 rebuild - still running it - over 70k miles now
36 month or 100k mile warranty

I've never been one for crate rebuilds, but they stand behind thier warranty
My first motor from them developed a crack in the block after 2 years and they gave me another motor because of it

I did a Jasper 258. For some reason they were very specific about matching SNs.

Since my local mechanic was an authorized installer (and I did not wish to do that myself) I had him do it. As it turned out there was a defective lifter and they replaced the entire engine and covered mechanics cost as well.

I have a Grooms Engine in mine (yes, it is a WJ).

www.groomsengines.com

Seems to work well. Been in there for over a year now. Great price too. The local shop I go to claims to have installed hundreds and never had an issue with them honoring warranty and had a very low complaint rate.

Oil filter question is a good thing, you want people to ask questions to get the right parts, mine is on the side of the block 2006 wrangler,
