Cracked Transfer Case

This cracked on the interstate after 3 hours at 65 MPH. Less than a week ago i drove it through deep water. The crack goes halfway around the case. Did the water have something to do with this? How can I prevent this from happeing again?

I doubt the water had anything to do with it. How deep was the water? If it was something like up to the rocker panels, that's not so bad.

it seems unlikely that the water caused the crack unless the case was smoking hot and you dunked it quickly: Then I could see the heat/cool cycle causing some troulbe.

Um - either way - you need a new Case there my man - sorry for the headache.

Is that where the shifter goes into the case? It looks like somebody cranked on the shifter real hard and cracked the case, probably tried to shift into low range while the vehicle was moving. It can be welded and fixed, any welding shop can easily do it but the case has to come apart.

The water came through the floorboards. Luckily when I bought the jeep, the previous owner had an extra transfer case and threw it in for free. There is a crack near the shifter but I don't know why it would crack on road, I think that it would crack right when the case is shifted incorrectly. I have never shifted it while moving, but the other owner could have. I have had the jeep for over a year, and if that was the cause I think that it would have happend sooner. I don't really know about that though. I was reading online and a site says that this is not uncommon for the np231 alumnium housing to crack. Is it possible that my chain broke and hit the housing hard? I was going 65 mph when it cracked. I put my new one in and the jeep runs with no problems. If it happens again, I'm going to swap it with an atlas II

Water can't crack aluminum, that's not possible. The shifter was forced and cracked it then it finally broke with you on the highway.

That's like the newbies saying "my axleshaft broke and I was barely getting on it" What broke it was the full throttle bashing they gave it hours, weeks or even months before and then it finally completely broke....

My opinion is drive it easy until it can be fixed.

Castings can have what appears to be cracks and can be perfectly normal if it doesnt go all the way through the housing.

i just put some epoxy on it to seal it hope it works! its not cracked like the one in the pic above and it does not leak when it sits in a parking lot or garage, it leaks when i drive.
