Could my U joint be going out??

I've had a couple problems for a while now and am just now getting around to fixing them. I've got a '98 TJ with a 4.0L and a 32RH tranny. When I take off hard I get a real bad rumble, and even occasionally going into 2nd gear at high speeds. My other issue is when I put it in gear it lurches every time, both in forward and reverse.

I've been told the first problem could be either my U joint or engine/tranny mounts. I have no idea about the other. Any input is greatly appreciated!!!

Not sure what you mean by "lurches". Lurching can be caused by the transmission slamming into gear because of toasted clutches, bad pump, or a mean shift kit. U-joints, mounts, and differential can also cause some kinds of lurching.

Rumbling can be U-joints, mount problem, or rear end.

U-joints usually have a "popping" sound when they are going bad. If they pop enough times, they will either fly apart or weld themselves together, immobilizing you for sure.

Could also be track bar or control arms...
