Cone filter inside modified airbox
The next mod on the xj is going to be a cone filter, but I still want some splash protection and engine bay heat protection. What I'm thinking is to take a utility knife and cut a circle about 3" in diameter on the front (facing front) of the airbox, and a large oval about 8"x4" on the side facing the wheelwell. I'll remove the stock filter and place the cone filter inside clamped to a 3 inch exhaust pipe piece about 6 inches long. then I'll stick that pipe down the air tube and clamp the airtube from the outside down onto the pipe. Then to finish it I'll attach a small breather filter on the end of the pcv tube that enters the airbox.
Has anyone done this before that has some tips? what about a better idea of cutting holes in the airbox. Can I fit a breather filter and a cone filter inside the airbox? Thanks Griff

That's brilliant! I'm going to do that on my zj! I was going to just take a 3.25" pipe and put a cone on the end but I didn't even think about splash protection (I've gotten my engine pretty dirty, I was actually pretty surprised).
Have you done it yet, any advice? Wow, I am really impressed. Eureka! Thanks! Matt |

I'm really interested in this, too. Or feedback as to why it's a bad idea...

This sounds like a pretty good idea as far as splash protection, but can I ask why you want a cone filter?
I generally dislike most cones for any vehicle because on average they let in more dirt and particulate into your engine, especially if you drive down lots of dusty roads, or play in sand. which does have an effect on long term reliability, bearing wear, etc... That said, your idea sounds great, basically sealing the cone inside of the airbox and running the intake to that. If you really have to have the sound that the cone gives, and the very mild performance gains if your engine is already modded and efficfient, then I would recommend a 'plug' in the head of the intake you described of a polymer filter to keep down on the dust and particulate that could make it in there, this would also serve as a decent splash guard for light water crossings.

I left the bottom of the stock airbox in mine. I used about a foot of stainless 3" exhaust (freebie) from a local shop, about 3 inches of 3" ID Diesel vacuum line (on the outside of the pipe, and used hose clamps at each end. The diesel hose makes up the 1/8 inch difference between the pipe and the flexy hose thingee. Hope that makes sense.
The K&N is snug on the bare pipe and the stock flexy intake hose is tight to the end with the vacuum line. I used a cone as big as a fish tale trout and occasionally administer a panty hose prefilter. Works good for me. When there's mud everywhere else under the hood, it is not on the cone or near it. ![]()
