Cleaning Up/Painting 8.8 Axle

I am picking up a Ford 8.8 axle from a late 90's Explorer. Pics look like some very minor surface rust, but I'll get to see it closer in person tomorrow.

I'd like to clean it up and paint it. Any suggestions? I'd like to clean it up and prepare the rust spots a little bit before covering it with paint, which I'm assuming Rustoleum would be fine for paint?

I'm a newb to this, so any help is appreciated... thanks.

Get some assorted wire wheel brushes for your drill. That will do quick work and run it down till it is shiny if at all possible. Good cleaning with a degreaser and wipe down with some laquer thinner then paint away.

Good call with the drill attachments. I'll see what I can find.

Here is a pic...

Here's a thread of my personal D30 build. Hopefully it should give you some good views of the guts, etc. and help you out with the process, even if it's for a different axle.

Also in my JF build, I documented the 8.8 a bit, starting about halfway in

It will last longer if you prime it with Rust-Opium rusty metal primer first. That stuff sticks to everything.
